KOSUN Develops Integrated Mud Separation Solution for Mining Drilling

Mining drilling operations generate drilling fluid containing rock cuttings, fine solids and other suspended particles. Effective separation and treatment of these solids are essential for maintaining drilling fluid performance, supporting continuous drilling and reducing the amount of waste requiring external handling.

To address these requirements, KOSUN provides integrated mud separation and treatment solutions designed for different mining drilling conditions, including mineral exploration, underground mine drilling, geothermal drilling, and water well drilling.

Integrated Equipment Configuration for Mining Drilling

Rather than relying on a single separation machine, the KOSUN solution combines multiple types of solid-liquid separation and fluid handling equipment according to the characteristics of the drilling application.

The system can incorporate:

Shale shakers for primary screening of larger drill cuttings

High-capacity shale shakers for higher-volume drilling operations

Decanter centrifuges for further separation of fine solids

Mud mixing equipment for fluid preparation and conditioning

Screw conveyors for collecting and transferring separated solids

Vacuum pumps and auxiliary equipment for fluid handling

This modular equipment configuration allows the treatment system to be matched to different drilling fluid volumes, solids characteristics and site conditions.

Multi-Stage Separation of Drilling Fluid

The treatment process begins with the separation of larger solids from returned drilling fluid.

A shale shaker provides the initial screening stage, using vibrating screens to separate drill cuttings and other coarse particles from the fluid phase. The screened fluid can then enter the next separation stage for further treatment.

For applications requiring finer solids control, a decanter centrifuge can provide additional separation of suspended and fine solid particles. By combining screening and centrifugal separation, the system can progressively reduce the solids content of the drilling fluid while retaining the reusable fluid phase.

Separated solids can be collected and transferred through conveying equipment for subsequent handling.

Mud Preparation and Circulation

After solids separation, the treated drilling fluid can be transferred to the mud mixing system for conditioning and preparation.

The mixing equipment provides a controlled environment for adjusting the drilling fluid before it is returned to the drilling operation. This creates a continuous treatment and circulation process rather than treating drilling fluid as a disposable material.

The overall configuration can therefore be adapted around the actual drilling process:

Returned Drilling Fluid → Screening → Fine-Solids Separation → Mud Mixing & Conditioning → Return to Drilling

The specific equipment combination and process configuration can be adjusted according to drilling depth, formation conditions, mud characteristics and required processing capacity.

Designed for Different Mining Drilling Applications

The integrated mud separation solution can be applied across a range of drilling scenarios, including:

Mineral Exploration Drilling
For exploration programs where drilling fluid must continuously transport cuttings from the borehole while maintaining suitable fluid properties.

Underground Mine Drilling
For confined or demanding underground environments where compact equipment configuration and reliable fluid handling are important.

Geothermal Drilling
For drilling operations requiring continuous circulation and treatment of drilling fluid under changing geological conditions.

Water Well Drilling
For drilling projects where separation of formation solids and recovery of reusable drilling fluid can help maintain stable circulation.

Equipment-Based Engineering from KOSUN

The performance of a mud separation system depends not only on individual equipment, but also on how the equipment is selected, configured and integrated.

With a range of solid-liquid separation and conveying equipment, KOSUN can develop system configurations according to specific drilling requirements. The resulting solution can combine screening, centrifugal separation, mud mixing and solids handling into an integrated treatment platform.

For mining drilling contractors and drilling service providers, this equipment-based approach provides greater flexibility when adapting mud treatment systems to different drilling environments.
