Drilling Fluid Solids Control System

Home > Application > Drilling Fluid Solids Control System

Drilling operations generate large volumes of drilling fluid containing drill cuttings, sand and other unwanted solids. Without effective solids control, the continuous accumulation of solids can affect drilling fluid properties, increase equipment wear and reduce the efficiency of the circulation system.

KOSUN provides drilling fluid solids control solutions designed to separate unwanted solids, maintain drilling fluid performance and support efficient fluid circulation and reuse throughout the drilling process.

Drilling Fluid Challenges in Drilling Operations

During drilling, drilling fluid continuously circulates between the well and the surface treatment system. As it carries drill cuttings back to the surface, the concentration of unwanted solids gradually increases.

If these solids are not effectively removed, they may:

  • Affect drilling fluid density and rheological properties
  • Increase wear on pumps and other circulation equipment
  • Reduce the efficiency of the drilling fluid system
  • Increase drilling fluid consumption
  • Increase the volume of drilling waste requiring further treatment

Effective solids control helps maintain the required drilling fluid properties while recovering reusable fluid from the circulating system.

KOSUN Drilling Fluid Solids Control Solution

KOSUN designs and manufactures integrated drilling fluid solids control systems for different drilling conditions and project requirements.

The system uses staged solid-liquid separation to remove solids of different particle sizes from drilling fluid. Depending on the drilling application, the configuration can include shale shakers, mud cleaners, hydrocyclones, decanter centrifuges, mud tanks, agitators and other auxiliary equipment.

The system configuration can be adjusted according to:

  • Drilling rig specifications
  • Well depth and drilling conditions
  • Drilling fluid properties
  • Required treatment capacity
  • Site conditions and operating environment

This allows the solids control system to be configured as a complete treatment solution rather than a fixed combination of equipment.

How Does Drilling Fluid Solids Control Work?

A typical drilling fluid solids control process uses several separation stages.

1. Primary Solids Separation

The shale shaker provides the first stage of separation by removing relatively large drill cuttings and solids from the returning drilling fluid.

This reduces the solids load entering downstream treatment equipment and helps protect subsequent separation stages.

2. Fine and Medium Solids Separation

After primary screening, mud cleaners and hydrocyclones can be used to separate smaller solid particles from the drilling fluid.

The appropriate separation equipment is selected according to the required cut point, drilling fluid properties and system capacity.

3. Fine Solids Separation

A decanter centrifuge can be incorporated for further separation of fine solids that remain in the drilling fluid.

This stage supports low-gravity solids control and can help recover usable drilling fluid for continued circulation.

4. Mud Storage and Circulation

After treatment, the drilling fluid is returned to the mud tanks for storage, mixing and circulation.

Mud agitators help maintain a uniform fluid condition and reduce solids settling inside the tanks.

Through multiple separation stages, the system continuously treats returning drilling fluid and supports its reuse in the drilling circulation process.

KOSUN Solids Control Systems for Different Drilling Environments

Oilfield Drilling Mud Solids Control System

Drilling conditions vary significantly between projects. KOSUN can configure solids control systems according to the operating environment, transportation requirements and local conditions.

Skid-Mounted Solids Control System

Skid-mounted systems integrate major treatment equipment on a common base. Factory assembly simplifies transportation and reduces installation work at the drilling site.

The modular design also allows the system to be relocated between drilling sites when required.

Mobile Solids Control System

For drilling projects requiring frequent relocation, the solids control system can be configured on a suitable trailer or transport platform.

The compact layout allows the main functional units to be moved as an integrated system, helping reduce site preparation and relocation requirements.

Desert Drilling Solids Control System

Drilling in desert environments requires consideration of high temperatures, dust, transportation and HSE requirements.

KOSUN can customize the system configuration and structural design according to the operating environment and project requirements, including solutions for high-temperature drilling areas.

Low-Temperature Solids Control System

For cold-region and high-altitude drilling operations, insulation and heating measures can be integrated into the solids control system.

The system can be customized according to local temperature conditions to support stable operation in low-temperature environments.

Customized Drilling Fluid Treatment Solutions

There is no single solids control configuration suitable for every drilling project.

KOSUN develops system configurations according to the drilling rig, circulating volume, drilling fluid characteristics and site conditions. Auxiliary units such as mud mixing, storage and circulation equipment can also be integrated when required.

The result is an application-specific drilling fluid treatment system designed around the actual drilling process.

Applications

KOSUN drilling fluid solids control solutions can be applied to:

  • Oil and gas drilling
  • Onshore drilling
  • Deep drilling
  • Geothermal drilling
  • Geological exploration
  • Other drilling operations requiring drilling fluid solids control

From individual separation stages to complete integrated systems, KOSUN provides customized solutions for managing solids in drilling fluid and supporting continuous fluid circulation and reuse.
