KOSUN provides mud recycling and solid-liquid separation systems for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) projects.

During HDD construction, drilling mud carries cuttings out of the borehole, lubricates the drilling tools, stabilizes the borehole, cools the drill bit, and helps control formation pressure. As the drilling process continues, the mud collects more solid particles. An effective recycling system therefore helps maintain mud performance and supports continuous drilling operations.

HDD Drilling Mud

HDD drilling mud plays an important role throughout the drilling process.

It carries drilled cuttings out of the borehole and helps keep the drilling fluid in circulation. In addition, the mud lubricates the drill string, reduces friction, and helps maintain borehole stability.

The mud also helps cool the drill bit and manage formation pressure. For this reason, proper solids control and mud conditioning are important during HDD operations.

KOSUN HDD Mud Recycling System

KOSUN HDD mud recycling systems remove drilled solids from returning mud and send the treated mud back to the drilling process.

A typical system includes:

  • Shale Shaker — Separates larger drilled cuttings and solid particles from returning mud.
  • Desander — Removes sand-sized particles and improves mud cleanliness.
  • Desilter — Separates finer solid particles from the drilling fluid.
  • Decanter Centrifuge — Removes ultra-fine solids from high-density mud when further separation is required.
  • Mud Mixing Tank — Stores and conditions drilling mud.
  • Mud Pumps — Transfer mud between the treatment units and the HDD drilling system.
  • Manifold System — Connects the treatment units and directs mud flow through the system.

KOSUN can adjust the equipment combination according to drilling conditions, mud properties, and project requirements.

HDD Mud Recycling Process

The supply pump transfers returning mud from the mud pit to the shale shaker. The shaker removes larger drilled cuttings, while the treated mud flows into the desander feed tank.

Next, the desander pump sends the mud through the desander hydrocyclones. The hydrocyclones separate sand-sized particles and direct the treated mud to the desilter feed tank.

The desilter pump then sends the mud through the desilter hydrocyclones. After fine solids separation, the treated mud flows into the mud storage tank.

The drilling mud pump returns the cleaned mud to the HDD system for continued use.

During drilling, mud properties such as density and viscosity may require adjustment. In this case, operators add the required mud materials through the mixing system and mix them thoroughly. The mud pump then returns the conditioned mud to the HDD drilling system.

For projects that require additional fine-solids separation, a decanter centrifuge can provide further treatment.

Key Benefits

  • Effective Solids Removal — The multi-stage process removes drilled solids from returning mud.
  • Mud Recycling — The system returns treated mud to the HDD drilling process and reduces the need for fresh mud.
  • Lower Waste Generation — Continuous mud recycling reduces the amount of drilling fluid requiring disposal.
  • Convenient Operation — A practical system layout simplifies operation and routine maintenance.
  • Continuous Drilling — The system supports long-term HDD operations and continuous mud circulation.

HDD Applications

KOSUN HDD mud recycling systems support a range of directional drilling projects, including:

  • Oil & Gas Pipeline Installation — Supports long-distance pipeline crossings using HDD.
  • Municipal Utilities — Supports the installation of underground water pipelines, power cables, and communication cables.
  • River & Waterway Crossings — Supports pipeline crossings beneath rivers, lakes, and other waterways.
  • Complex Ground Conditions — Handles drilling mud from projects involving sand, clay, and other variable ground conditions.

KOSUN HDD Mud Recycling Solutions

KOSUN combines solids separation, mud conditioning, and recycling into an integrated HDD mud treatment solution.

From the shale shaker and hydrocyclones to mud tanks, pumps, and optional centrifuges, KOSUN can configure the system around the project’s drilling conditions, mud characteristics, and site requirements.

As a result, the system helps contractors maintain drilling mud quality, reduce fresh mud consumption, and manage drilled solids throughout the HDD operation.
