A mud cleaner is an important component of drilling fluid solids control, combining hydrocyclone separation and screening to remove fine solids from circulating mud. KOSUN designs mud cleaning equipment for secondary or tertiary separation in drilling fluid treatment systems.

How a Mud Cleaner Works in Drilling Fluid Treatment

During drilling, solid particles accumulate in the circulating fluid. Shale shakers remove larger cuttings, while downstream separation equipment addresses finer particles that remain in the mud.

A mud cleaner combines hydrocyclones with a screening stage. The hydrocyclones separate solids from the liquid phase, and the screen further separates particles from the hydrocyclone underflow. This process helps remove cuttings while allowing recoverable drilling fluid to return to the circulation system.

The appropriate configuration depends on the drilling fluid properties, particle characteristics, and required separation performance.

Hydrocyclone Separation and Screening

Desander and desilter cones can be selected according to the treatment requirements. After hydrocyclone separation, the underflow passes across a screen, where larger particles are retained and discharged.

KOSUN equipment features an adjustable mechanical screen deck and hook-strip screens to facilitate screen replacement. These design features support routine operation and maintenance in industrial solids control applications.

Supporting Weighted Mud Recovery

Weighted drilling fluids commonly contain barite to achieve the required density. A mud cleaner can help recover reusable weighting material by separating larger cuttings while allowing recoverable weighted mud to pass through the screen.

Actual recovery performance depends on mud formulation, particle-size distribution, screen selection, and operating conditions. Equipment configuration should therefore be matched to the requirements of the drilling operation.

Manufacturing for Industrial Applications

The factory manufacturing process provides a closer look at the equipment before it enters service. Component assembly and the integration of hydrocyclone separation and screening are important parts of preparing the unit for its intended application.

For drilling contractors and solids control system integrators, equipment selection should account for the required treatment stages, circulation requirements, installation space, and compatibility with upstream and downstream units.

KOSUN provides solids control equipment for drilling fluid treatment applications, including mud cleaners designed for secondary or tertiary separation.
