Eni announces new oil and gas discovery in Egypt's Western Desert

Apr 23, 2022

According to a report by the Global Energy News Network on April 19, recently, Eni Group announced that it has discovered new oil and natural gas in the Meleiha block in the Western Desert of Egypt, with reserves of about 8,500 barrels per day of oil equivalent. These new discoveries have been linked to production under an infrastructure-led exploration strategy, maximizing exploration opportunities near existing infrastructure.

60m of net hydrocarbon formation in Cretaceous-Jurassic Alam El Bueib & Khatatba formation via Nada E Deep 1X and 30m in Cretaceous-Jurassic sandstone in Matruh & Khatatba formation via Meleiha SE Deep 1X 35 meters of net oil and gas reservoirs were discovered in the large Cretaceous sandstone of Alam El Bueib in Well Emry Deep 21. These results, combined with a total of eight exploratory well discoveries in 2021, with a 75% success rate, confirm the potential of the area. Other exploration activities in the block are underway and are promising.

With these discoveries, Eni, through its joint venture with EGPC, AGIBA, continues its successful near-field strategy in the mature basins of the Western Desert, aimed at maximizing production by controlling development costs and reducing time-to-market. In addition, Eni reaffirmed its commitment in the Western Desert, with the recent acquisition of two exploration blocks, with a new high-resolution 3D seismic survey planned for 2022 in the Meleiha lease, also with the aim of investigating the area's potential in line with energy transition goals. natural gas potential.

Eni has been operating in Egypt since 1954, through its subsidiary IEOC. The company is currently the leading producer in the country with an equity production of approximately 360,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Under its net-zero emissions strategy by 205, Eni is involved in a series of initiatives aimed at decarbonizing Egypt's energy sector, including the development of CCS plants, renewable energy plants, agricultural feedstocks for biorefinery, and more.
