KOSUN Share: Large-scale oil field discovered in Bohai, China

Mar 31, 2020

Large-scale oil field discovered in Bohai, China, CNOOC announced on the 18th that China's largest offshore oil field, the Bohai Oilfield, has made great discoveries in oil and gas exploration: Kenli 6-1-3, located in the northern part of Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea, drilled about 20 meters of oil reservoirs and test single well crude oil production can reach more than 400,000 barrels per year. CNOOC said that the discovery is expected to become the first large oilfield in the Laibei low uplift, which is of great significance for ensuring China's energy security, stabilizing the output of eastern oilfields, and promoting the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei.

The discovery well Kenli 6-1-3 completed a drilling depth of 1596 meters, and the annual output of the tested crude oil reached more than 400,000 barrels. After being refined into gasoline, it can be used for about 10,000 cars for 5 years.

Since the end of the 1970s, after more than 40 years of exploration in the northern area of Laizhou Bay, the results have been unsatisfactory. The discovered reserves are small in scale and not concentrated in distribution, and effective production capacity cannot be established.

In 2019, CNOOC continued to search for large and medium-sized oil and gas fields in various sea areas based on unconventional theories and technologies, and made more than 10 new discoveries in domestic sea areas.

This discovery of the Kenli 6-1 oilfield has large reserves, good oil properties, and high test capacity; the discovery not only broke the situation of no commercial oil and gas discovery in the region for more than 40 years, but also demonstrated the huge exploration prospects in the southern Bohai Sea. Bohai Oilfield has laid a solid foundation for achieving 10 years of green and stable production and achieving the goal of 40 million tons.

CNOOC stated that on the basis of this discovery, it will continue to promote the successful commissioning of 8 new projects including the Bozhong 19-6 Test Zone and China's first self-contained deep-water oilfield Liuhua 16-2, and will strive to achieve more new breakthroughs in more complex oil and gas layers and deeper waters.
