The first successful drilling waste resource utilization of polysulfonate mud in China

Jun 10, 2019

Drilling mud, also known as drilling fluid, plays a very important role in drilling operations and is considered to be the "blood" in oil drilling, but its chemical compositions are complex. Therefore, drilling waste mud is also one of the main pollution sources in the oil and gas industry. The harmless and resourceful treatment of drilling waste mud has become a significant technical problem in the process of oil and gas exploitation, and it is also the only way to achieve clean production and green development in oil and natural gas exploitation.

At the Moxi 009-3-X3 Wellsite of Middle Sichuan Oil and Gas Field, PetroChina Southwest Oil & Gasfield Company, the mud zero-discharge treatment equipment is placed on the side of the rig's solids control equipment. The treated mud is returned to the drilling solids control system for recycling. Through the conveyor system, the cuttings are added with treating agents to make the foundation soil, and the brick making machine is using the foundation soil to produce baking-free bricks.

When introducing the characteristics of “mud zero-discharge and recycling technology”, Deng Hao, deputy chief engineer of CNPC Research Institute of Safety and Environment Technology, said that the main features of this technology are as follows: firstly, collect drilling waste mud and cuttings while drilling on site to replace the traditional waste collection method of excavating mud pits; secondly, for the separated waste mud (liquid), adopt the technical idea of “removing the harmful and retaining the useful” and take “physical separation” as the main process to realize the mud treatment and recycling for drilling on site; thirdly, the wastes, such as the separated cuttings (solids), are added with the developed curing agent to achieve solidification and harmlessness on the spot. At the same time, the technology has also met the requirements of the corresponding resource utilization intensity and other indicators, and the treated wastes are used as foundation soil for paving roads and further made into building materials, such as baking-free bricks and stone slates. This technology has solved the recycling and reduction of waste liquid in oil and gas exploitation process, realized the harmlessness and resource utilization of solid waste, and completely eliminated the hidden danger of drilling pollution.

The successful application of this technology is a breakthrough, and the waste mud resource utilization is the first case in China. The harmless treatment, recycling and resource utilization of drilling waste is the only way to achieve clean production of oil and natural gas, and is also an inevitable choice for realizing the green development of the oil and gas industry.
