90 m³/h Mud Treatment System for Continuous Drilling Research

Aug 21, 2026

Project Background

A research institution in Southwest China conducts continuous drilling experiments and scientific research activities, generating significant volumes of drilling mud during testing.

The conventional approach relied on collecting and transporting the generated mud for off-site disposal. For continuous research operations, this created additional transportation and disposal costs and made mud handling more difficult to coordinate with ongoing experiments.

The institution required a more efficient on-site treatment solution that could accommodate continuous mud generation while making better use of recovered water.

Project Requirements

The treatment system needed to meet several specific requirements:

  • Continuous treatment: Handle drilling mud generated during ongoing experimental activities.

  • High processing capacity: Provide a treatment capacity of up to 90 m³/h.

  • Compact layout: Adapt to the available installation space at the research facility.

  • Solid-liquid separation: Efficiently separate solids from the liquid phase.

  • Water recovery: Recover suitable process water for reuse in subsequent experiments.

  • Automated operation: Reduce the need for frequent manual intervention during operation.

KOSUN Treatment Solution

KOSUN developed a customized mud treatment system based on the site's operating conditions and application requirements.

The system integrates multiple treatment stages to provide continuous solid-liquid separation of drilling mud. Drilling mud generated during experiments is collected and processed through the system, with the solid phase separated for subsequent handling and the liquid phase further treated for potential reuse.

The overall system adopts a compact configuration and automated operating mode, allowing the treatment process to be integrated into the research facility without significantly disrupting ongoing experimental activities.

Treatment Process

Drilling Mud Collection → Solid-Liquid Separation → Solids Handling → Water Recovery → Water Reuse

The integrated process enables drilling mud to be treated directly at the source rather than relying entirely on off-site transportation and disposal.

By recovering and reusing suitable water, the system also helps reduce freshwater demand during repeated drilling experiments.

Project Results

The customized system provides the research institution with a more practical approach to managing drilling mud generated during continuous experimental activities.

90 m³/h Treatment Capacity
Supports continuous drilling research and experimental operations.

On-Site Mud Treatment
Reduces reliance on conventional off-site mud transportation and disposal.

Efficient Solid-Liquid Separation
Separates the solid and liquid phases of drilling mud for subsequent handling and treatment.

Water Recovery and Reuse
Recovered water can be reused in appropriate experimental processes, improving water utilization.

Compact and Automated Design
The system is adapted to the available site space and supports stable operation with reduced manual intervention.

Application Value

This project demonstrates the application of KOSUN's solid-liquid separation technology in drilling research and experimental environments.

For research facilities where drilling mud is generated continuously but treatment space is limited, an integrated on-site treatment system can provide a more efficient alternative to conventional collection and off-site disposal.

The project also highlights the flexibility of KOSUN's customized treatment solutions, which can be configured according to specific capacity, space, operating conditions, and water reuse requirements.
