The usage method of Mud Gun

Aug 27, 2025

In numerous fields such as municipal drainage, construction, river dredging, and oilfield drilling, mud guns, with their high efficiency and convenience, have become important tools for handling mud and sewage. The mud gun effectively prevents the accumulation of sediment at the bottom of the tank through high-speed jet flow, ensuring that the drilling fluid remains uniform, thereby maintaining the continuity and safety of the drilling operation. Therefore, the correct use of mud guns can not only enhance drilling efficiency but also significantly reduce the risk of equipment failure and extend the service life of the entire solid control system. Mastering the correct usage of mud guns and understanding their safety operation norms are essential skills for every operator. This article will provide you with a detailed guide for using mud guns.

The mud gun is a key auxiliary device in the solid control system and is usually installed on the upper part of the mud tank. Its main function is to ensure the normal operation of the mud mixer. By generating high-speed jets, the slurry gun can effectively impact the sediment at the bottom of the tank, preventing sediment from accumulating on the impeller of the agitator. This preventive effect is of vital importance because the accumulation of sediment can cause overload when the agitator starts up and even burn out the motor. After the mud tank has been storing mud for a long time, before starting the agitator, it is necessary to first use a mud gun to disperse the mud sand deposited around the agitator impeller. This operation can effectively prevent the agitator from being damaged due to excessive load.

Before using the mud gun, a thorough inspection is indispensable. It is necessary to frequently check whether there is any mud leakage at the joints of the mud gun. If leakage is found, the sealing ring should be replaced in time. For the union joint part, it is recommended to disassemble and clean it once every six months, apply calcium-based grease to the rotating sleeve, and at the same time check the wear degree of the sealing ring. Checking whether each control gate valve is open is a necessary step before starting. At the same time, make sure that the entire solid control system has been connected as required and there are no abnormalities in all the manifold before starting the power supply. It is also necessary to check the lubricating oil levels of related equipment such as sand pumps and mud agitators to ensure good lubrication and avoid phenomena such as oil shortage, dry grinding or excessively high oil levels.

When operating a mud gun, specific sequences and norms must be followed. When conducting sand cleaning work or high-pressure slurry circulation, the valve of the jet pipeline should be opened first, followed by the main valve of the upstream pipeline. When stopping the operation, the sequence is reversed: first close the main valve, then the valve of the jet pipeline to prevent high pressure from being blocked in the jet pipeline. When the mud gun is in operation, the operator should closely observe its working effect. If no mud movement is found around the mud gun, it is necessary to check whether the outlet of the lower nozzle is blocked. For the use of the mixing device, the butterfly valve at the bottom of the funnel should be closed first. After the pump is turned on and the circulation is normal, the butterfly valve should be slowly opened to prevent the liquid from flowing out of the funnel. Before shutting down, the butterfly valve should be closed first, and then the sand pump should be stopped.

Regular maintenance and upkeep are the key to ensuring the long-term reliable operation of mud guns. In addition to disassembling and cleaning the union joint and adding grease every six months, it is also necessary to regularly clean the conical silo and the drilling fluid vibrating screen to remove the sediment. After each well is drilled, the accumulated sand in each tank must be removed and the mud pipelines should be flushed with clean water or steam. After use, the mixing funnel should be rinsed clean with clear water. Correct operation and regular maintenance of the mud gun can not only prevent the major loss of burning out the agitator motor, but also significantly improve the drilling efficiency and ensure the safety underground.
